The local businesses on the list

Most new companies are consultancies, trades and holding companies with no shop front. A few are plainly the kind of business residents will notice:

  • Wine Shop Fareham Ltd, registered 8 September at 179 West Street. It is classed as a general food and drink retailer.
  • Morgan’s Village Hardware Ltd, registered 21 September at 227a West Street, as a hardware, paint and glass shop.
  • Kozho Grill Limited, registered 24 September at 4 Castle Street, Portchester, as a takeaway.
  • Acorn Pre School Stubbington Ltd, registered 9 September at Holy Rood Church on Gosport Road in Stubbington. It is a company limited by guarantee, classed under pre-primary education.
  • Foragers Bounty Ltd, registered 30 September in White Hart Lane, Portchester. Its listed activities are baking bread and pastry, making cider and fruit wines, and botanical gardens.
  • Restore Your World CIC, a community interest company registered 7 September in Chestnut Way, listed under health activities.
  • Craftedliving Knits, Prints & Homewares Ltd, registered 14 September in Hatherley Crescent, Portchester, for handmade textiles and homewares, sold online and at stalls and markets.

What the rest are

We sorted September’s companies by the activity codes they gave Companies House. Some give more than one code, so a company can appear in two groups:

  • 16 in building and trades: roofing, plumbing and heating, electrics, fencing, scaffolding
  • 12 in management consultancy
  • 10 in buying, letting or managing property
  • 9 selling online or by mail order
  • 5 in food and drink
  • 4 holding companies
  • 4 in health

By postcode, 55 are in PO16, which covers the town centre and Portchester. There are 18 in PO15, mostly Whiteley and Segensworth, and 11 in PO14, which covers west Fareham, Stubbington and Hill Head. Five are in PO17, around Wickham, Southwick and Knowle. Those villages are a few miles north of the town centre and sit in Winchester district, but carry Fareham postal addresses.

One company on the list, at Fareham Road in Gosport, is not in Fareham at all. The search matched the road name.

Why one address appears 27 times

Of the 90, 27 give their registered office as 203 West Street, Fareham. One more uses 203a. Companies often register at an accountant’s or formation agent’s address rather than where they trade. So those 27 may work anywhere.

The same is true further out. Three companies registered at Forum 6 on Solent Business Park in Whiteley carry the Specsavers name and other towns’ names: Beverley, Cockermouth and Marple. A licensed restaurant company named after Southampton, Battle Cruiser Southampton Limited, registered at The Gardens on Broadcut.

What a registration does and does not mean

A company appearing on the register means the company exists. It does not mean a shop has opened, that anyone has been hired, or that the business will trade at the address given. Many new companies never trade, and some are set up to hold property or shares.

All the monthly totals above come from the same search, run on the same day, so they compare like with like.
