All three eastbound lanes of the M27 are closed from Whiteley to Portsmouth after a crash this morning. What is shut, the queues and when it should clear.

The M27 eastbound is closed between junction 9 at Whiteley and junction 12 for Portsmouth after a crash this morning. All three lanes and the hard shoulder are shut, according to National Highways’ live record of the incident.

National Highways’ current incidents service logged the crash just before 7am on Friday 16 October. It records the event as an accident and the closure as covering the whole eastbound carriageway between the two junctions.

National Highways has not said whether anyone was hurt. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary had published no statement on its news pages by 9.45am.

What is closed

At 9.45am the National Highways record showed:

  • M27 eastbound, junctions 9 to 12: fully closed, 3 of 3 lanes and the hard shoulder
  • M27 eastbound exit slip at junction 11 (Fareham): one of two lanes closed by an obstruction
  • M27 eastbound, junctions 9 to 11: queuing traffic behind the closure, with delays of about 27 minutes on that stretch alone

When it should reopen

National Highways’ estimate at 9.45am was that the closure would clear by late morning. Estimates on its live service change as the incident is dealt with, so check the current incidents page (search for M27) before you set off.

What it means for you

  • Heading east from Southampton or Whiteley: the motorway is shut from junction 9. The A27 through Park Gate, Titchfield and Fareham town centre is the parallel route, so expect it to be much busier than usual this morning.
  • Heading for Portsmouth: the M27 is not available east of Whiteley until the closure lifts. Allow extra time, or delay the trip if you can.
  • Westbound drivers are not caught by the closure, which covers the eastbound carriageway only.
  • Planned works still stand. Our Fareham roadworks page lists the road closures and overnight motorway works booked for the next fortnight.

We will update this page when the motorway reopens or when National Highways or the police say more.
