Not one food business in Fareham borough holds a zero rating. 618 of 721 rated venues have five stars, and 12 sit at two or below. The full list is here.

Not a single food business in Fareham borough is currently rated zero for food hygiene. Of the 804 premises on the borough’s register, 721 carry a numbered rating, and 618 of those hold the top score of five. That is 85.7 per cent.

We pulled the figures straight from the Food Standards Agency’s register on 7 September.

The zero is the one that makes the news, and Fareham does not have one. It is not unusual to have none, but it is not universal either: Gosport has two zero-rated businesses today, and Southampton has two.

Fareham sits in the middle of that group, and the gap between it and its Hampshire district neighbours is a couple of percentage points. The real outlier is Southampton, where nearly a third of rated premises score four or below.

Twelve premises in the borough currently sit at two or below. A rating is a snapshot of the last inspection, so the date matters as much as the number: some of these are more than a year old and the business may have changed a great deal since.

Every one of those businesses has rights under the scheme. A business can appeal a rating in writing within 21 days of being told what it is. It can submit a right to reply, which the Food Standards Agency publishes next to the rating. And once it has made improvements it can ask for a re-rating inspection, at which the officer looks at standards generally, so the score can go up, down or stay the same.

A further 58 premises in the borough are awaiting inspection and carry no rating at all, and 25 are exempt because of what they do.

What a rating actually measures

A hygiene rating is not a verdict on the food. Inspectors score three things: how hygienically the food is handled, the condition of the premises, and how well the business manages and records what it does to keep food safe. The last of those, the paperwork, is often what separates a three from a five.

Ratings in England are also not compulsory to display. A business does not have to put its sticker in the window, which is why checking the register is worth the thirty seconds.

What it means for you

  • Check before you order, not after. Search any Fareham address on the FSA’s ratings site and you get the score, the inspection date and any reply the business has published.
  • Look at the date as well as the number. A two from July 2025 tells you about July 2025. A business can have been re-inspected since only if it asked for it.
  • A low score is not a closure. Councils close premises only where there is an imminent risk to health, using a separate power. Everything in the table above is trading.

  • Care home and school kitchens are on the register too. Two of the recent ratings above are care homes, which is worth knowing if you are choosing one for a relative.
